The Richmond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Self-Defense Academy began at the beginning of 2002 in Richmond, Virginia, with the goal of providing top-notch, professional, realistic, and safe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Muay Thai Kickboxing training to the greater Richmond community.

Head instructor, Eric Burdo is a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and certified under Julio "Foca" Fernandez. Mr. Fernandez is a sixth-degree black belt under the late Grandmaster Carlson Gracie, Sr. During his ten years of active competition for the Carlson Gracie Competition Team, Mr. Fernandez went undefeated in over two hundred matches.

Mr. Fernandez has honored Eric with the opportunity to teach the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Richmond area, under the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu United States Association (BJJUSA), of which Mr. Fernandez is president. The Richmond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy is also an official school of the BJJ Revolution Team.
